The barren, rounded, tops of the
Ounasselk fell area with its
dozens of treeless peaks rise in the middle of the Pallas-Ounastunturi
National Park.
Here in the nightless night of summer,
the blazing colours of autumn,
the light shows of the winter northern lights, and the bright light
and dazzling white snowdrifts of spring, Lapland Hotels Pallas,
comfortable and rich in tradition, welcomes its guests, many of
whom return time and again to enjoy the area's enchanting nature.
The Finnish Tourist Association built a
splendid functionalist style
hotel in 1938. Aulis Hmlinen designed this first fell hotel in
the country and Alvar Aalto designed its furnishings. In the winter,
reindeer brought tourists to the hotel.
During the war, from 1941 - 1944, the
splendid hotel at Pallas was a
holiday place for German soldiers until they blew it up in October 1944
during their retreat. The new Hotel Pallas, designed by Jouko Ylihannu,
was opened in the spring 1948.
There is a four-km climb from Hotel
Pallas to the peak of the most
majestic 807m high Taivaskero Fell. It was here that the Helsinki
Olympic torch, symbolising the rays of the midnight sun, was lit on
6 July 1952. The torch was carried by 1,680 relay runners from Pallas
to Helsinki - the number of runners tells you just how long the journey
is. Paavo Nurmi lit the flame in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium thirteen
days later.

The Pallas - Ounastunturi national park
was created in 1938 and
is the 3rd largest in Finland. Since then, tourists have continued
to visit Pallas - many, year after year - all seeking the peace and
tranquillity of the untouched nature. The scenery in Pallas is among the
most breathtaking of Finland. Pallas has carefully retained it's traditions
so that each of our guests can experience a bit of
history for themselves.

Hetta, the centre of the Municipality of
Enonteki, lies in the
place where the waves of Lake Ounasjrvi beat against the Arctic
earth and the fells meet the tundra. Hetta is a mixture of S mi
and Finnish. Here, party shoes as well as reindeer fur boots rhythmically
tread.
Hetta is an age-old S mi dwelling place,
where the traditional
culture is still very much alive. Natural livelihoods are still
practised, handicraft skills are passed on from one generation to
the next, and the tradition of the Joiku [traditional S mi lyric
poems] continues to flourish. Yet, on the other hand, Hetta is a
modern village with diverse services.
Lapland Hotels Hetta is in a splendid
location on the shores of Lake
Ounasjrvi. The windows look out on to a beautiful view across the
lake towards the magnificent 711m high Pyhkero Fell. In the hustle
and bustle of Lapland Hotels Hetta, the S mi, Lapp, and southern
traveller meet in an easygoing cosy atmosphere. Our aim at Lapland
