Grand Hotel
Address: ul Slawkowska 5/7
Zip Code: 31-014
City: Krakow
Country: Poland
Tel: +48 124 217 255
Fax: +48 124 218 360
Url: http://www.grand.pl

The Grand Hotel is situated in the very heart of the Old Town. It is a
traditional hotel with a unique atmosphere created by palatial suits,
stylishly arranged rooms, corridors with antique stained-glass
windows... and much more.

Since its establishment in the nineteenth century the hotel has played
host to distinguished guests from around the world. We cordially invite
you to stay with us.

The Grand is Cracow's most beutiful luxury hotel situated in the very
heart of the Old Town, only 50 meters away from the Market Place.
The Grand hotel was established ca. 1885 by Eustachy Jaksa Chronowski
on the pramises of the elegant Prince Czartoryski Palace. Several years
later the hotel was expanded, taking in adjacent buildings successively
purchased by its enterprising enterpreneur.

In 1890 work was started on merging all the buildings into one complex.
The work was pursued according to designs prepared by Tadeusz
Stryjenski. Great care was taken throughout to preserve the palace
interior. A press correspondent made this comment in 1911:

The former Czartoryski palace contained valuable relics which had to be
preserved and skilfully put over for use. Eustachy Chronowski did this
with meticulous care as befits a really cultured man and today these
relics represent a most unique ornamentation. Suits with beautiful
coffered ceilings, lovely ornamented fireplaces, wall paintings and
17th century portraits are unique features rarely met in a hotel.

Care was taken to preservethe old interior decoration and the richly
ornamented facades. Modern fittings and a hotel power plant were
installed. A big, modern hotel emerged with suites for 150 guests,
several restaurants including the famous Mirror Hall with quiet private
rooms and loggias, a cake shop and a fancy cafe.

The Jan Bisanz cafe, one of interwar Cracow's most elegant
establishments, was opened on the hotel's premises in the 1920s. The
cafe became the meeting place of the city's elite and artists.
Painters, poets and writers used to give vent to their inspirations and
ideas on a huge canvas hanging on one of the walls up to 1936. The
hotel's era of grandeur came to an end shortly after World War Two when
it was taken over by state. Over the years the hotel fell into decay.
It was only in 1989 that Wawel-Imos International, a company set up
especially to refurbish the Grand, thorougly renovated the hotel under
the supervision of Cracow's Historic Complex Revaluation Board (Zarzad
Rewaloryzacji Zespol¢w Zabytkowych miasta Krakowa). Modernised and
adjusted to modern times, the Grand hotel continues its more then a
century old tradition.

historical buildings of the former Wawel Chapter and the Kosciuszko
Mound.

Cracow attracts tourists like a magnet. Known as "the city of living
stones", Cracow has witnessed Polish history for over a millennium.
Hotel Senacki, restored in meticulous detail, is part of the ancient
structure of the town. Here in deep cellars of the hotel medieval
merchants stored barrels with wine, beer and mead for the royal family.
Legend has it that the dragon that lived in a cave underneath Wawel
Castle drank water from the Vistula to quench its thirst. Our mission
is to be a haven on the royal route where the need for comfort, peace
and taste is lavishly satisfied. We invite you to Senacka Restaurant
located in the Column Lounge where you can order exquisite old Polish
style dishes and European meals. We also recommend a wide selection of
alcoholic beverages and wines from renown vineyards of France, Italy,
Spain and the New World.

The hotel cellars - formerly used for merchant stalls - are located on
the medieval street level and house a fine cafe and pub in five stylish
chambers: Baroque, Beer, Merchant, Portal and King Ladislas the Elbow
High Halls. Hiding from the scorching summer heat you can listen to
good music and talk to friends over a glass of beer. All chambers are
equipped with the latest in audio-visual equipment to meet the needs of
the most discerning clientele. A glass of quality drink before retiring
to bed is highly recommended.

Football fans can watch Polish and European Premier League matches on a
plasma screen.

Hotel Senacki stands right in the centre of what was in the Middle Ages
a rectangular market square surrounded by the defence wall called "the
Circle" (Pol. Ok¢l). On both sides of the street were brick stores of
which only two have been preserved to this day. This is where the hotel
cafe is located.

After 1335 when the trading outlets were closed down, extensions were
built and the buildings were converted into burgher houses. With the
incorporation of the Circle into the town, trade was relocated to the
Cloth Hall (Pol. Sukiennice). in the Main Market Square. Hotel Senacki
is located in the southern section of Grodzka Street connecting the
Main Market Square with the royal castle. The building which houses the
hotel was originally erected as a single floor and entrance building at
the turn of the 14th c. In the second half of the 16th c. the southern
entrance was added, and a century later an extension was built in its
northern part along with the second floor.

In the second half of the 19th c. the building received its Classicist
fa‡ade, which has not been preserved to this day, and in 1874 another
floor was added. The imposing four-axis structure featured the highly
representative first floor marked with a richly ornamented floral bass-
relief and prominent window frames. The hotel rooms overlooking Grodzka
Street offer a fabulous view of the monumental Baroque structure of the
Church of SS Peter and Paul built in the second quarter of the 17th c.
The magnificent stone fa‡ade is reminiscent of the Roman Il Gesu Jesuit
Church. The figures of the Twelve Apostles stand on columns in front of
the church. From the hotel windows you can also see St. Andrew's Church
built towards the end of the 11th c. This is one of the oldest churches
in the town which managed to survive the invasion of Tartars in the
13th c.

Hotel Senacki stands next to the buildings of the Jagiellonian
University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, established in
1364. The adjacent building of Collegium Iuridicum was erected in the
same period as the first floor of the hotel building, i.e. at the turn
of the 14th c. The quadrangle surrounded by Renaissance arcades
features a fine sculpture by I. Mitoraj. At the end of Grodzka Street
stand St. Giles' Church and Bernardine Church both dating back to the
Middle Ages. All adjacent streets were also built at that time. Grodzka
Street or the Royal Tract was used between the 14th and 18th c. as the
main ceremonial route from the town limits through the Florian Gate and
the Main Market Square to Wawel Castle. Participants of all major
events such as coronations, weddings, funerals and other state and
court occasions travelled along Grodzka Street towards the Cathedral
and/or the Castle. From the square you can access Wawel Castle via
Grodzka and Kanonicza Streets. Kanonicza Street features two
interesting museums: Archdiocesan and Wyspanski Museums dedicated to
the renowned painter, poet and playwright - one of Cracow's most
beloved sons. The palace formerly owned by Erasm Ciolek, now under
renovation, is the seat of the National Museum featuring an interesting
collection of medieval art.
