Dedham
Institution for Savings
The Dedham Institution for Savings was founded in 1831 by a group of Dedham citizens
interested in having a thrift institution in the town. Mutual savings banks (ones which
have no stockholders, but are owned by and run for the benefit of the depositors) were
taking hold in America, copied after a few similar banks in England. There was a mistrust
of commercial banks then because of so many failures and the perception that such banks
were only for the wealthy. Consequently, many mutuals avoided the word "bank"
entirely, preferring instead "Institution for Savings" or "Savings Fund
Society" in their names.

Stoneham
Co-operative Bank
In 1886, Stoneham faced a sagging economy primarily due to the weakening of the once
prosperous shoe industry. Facing uncertain economic times, Stoneham residents had few
places to turn for financial support. It was at this point that a group of Stoneham
citizens got together at the Town Office to consider the feasibility of establishing a
co-operative bank in Stoneham; an institution they felt critical to assist the town and
its citizens in the transition from an industrial center to a residential community
populated by individuals working outside of its borders.
Stoneham
Savings Bank
The Stoneham Savings Bank was established by the Massachusetts Legislature and was
incorporated on August 7, 1855. During those early years, the bank conducted business in
various locations throughout Stoneham Square. However, as the bank began to grow and
prosper, it was decided by management to expand and obtain its own building. Land was
acquired and a new building erected in 1926 on what is now the current site of the
Stoneham Square office at 359 Main Street.

Nantucket Bank was originally known as the Nantucket Institution for Savings. The Bank
received its charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on April 2, 1834, and opened
for business on January 26, 1835. The steady growth of the bank is reflected in its
deposit history. On that first day of operation in 1835 the Bank received eleven deposits
totaling $257. By the end of its first year deposits had grown to $1,708, and in 1885,
it's 50th year, deposits totaled $339 thousand. By its 100th year the Bank had long passed
the million dollar mark with deposits of $2.6 million. The 150th anniversary, celebrated
in 1984, showed the deposits exceeding $50 million, and today the Bank has deposits over
$300 million, and assets in excess of $450 million.
