Andrew Varah established his workshops in
1975, designing and
making individual pieces of furniture. His 17th century English
farmhouse includes old barns converted into sufficient workshop
space for him and his five young cabinet makers. His workshop is
just one hour from London by train and is within ten minutes of exits
from both M1 and M6 motorways.
Andrew designs every piece, purchases all
the materials and
instructs his cabinet makers at every stage to completion. Each
piece is personally supervised and handled by him. He will meet you
anywhere, make models if necessary, submit a whole range of designs
and let you decide in your own time how the commission should proceed.
Almost every client wants to visit his workshops and by prior
appointment this is always arranged.
Andrew's work has been commissioned by
names and by individuals who want to experience, perhaps for the
first time and perhaps on a limited budget, commissioning a small
piece of furniture. He accepts that design is subjective and no
two people will necessarily have the same taste. To Andrew this
is an advantage each piece is stimulating for the client and a
challenge for the designer and maker. Andrew is best known for his
contemporary designs and it is this area he finds most exciting.
The pieces shown here give just a small taste of the possibilities.
No item is too complex for Andrew Varah.
His skills include fine
marquetry, specialist veneering, carving in solid wood, gilding
and the use of glass and metal. Andrew is able to look back in
time and design, though never copy, a period piece, so its design
remains unique and yet incorporates the style, material and detail
of the specific period.
Hand-made furniture is not necessarily
expensive. Andrew is very
happy to design and make to a budget and is equally happy to cost
a range of options so that the client may choose how much to spend.
Every piece is unique and a reflection of
the personality of the
client. These few examples of his work are just a taste of the
possibilities on offer. Commissioning a piece of quality
furniture is a fascinating and rewarding experience and there
is no finer way to tart than with a call to Andrew Varah.

Our philosophy behind making traditional
furniture is simple - to produce the finest quality upholstery to
the highest of standards and to your personal specification. Whatever
your requirements we will work with you to produce pieces that not
only suit you to perfection but will also work in harmony with your
home and your individual lifestyle requirements.
As designers, frame makers and
upholsterers we have the breadth
of skill to hand-craft furniture from the frame upwards, manipulating
designs to suit you and tailoring each piece to your own needs,
whether it is to create a sofa to fit into a specific space or to
alter the design and dimensions to meet a particular requirement.
No one person is the same size - you wouldnt buy a jacket if the
sleeves were too short; why should you by a sofa that is too deep!
With our fully bespoke service our team
of designers, frame makers
and upholsterers work closely together to interpret your ideas and
turn them into reality utilizing their wide ranging skills, insight
and knowledge coupled together with years of experience within the
upholstery industry offering you an unrivalled design and build
service, not available anywhere else.
We use only the finest of materials to
produce furniture that will
offer durability and long-life; attention is paid to the smallest
of details. Unlike many larger manufacturers we only use the
experienced eye and hand to cut fabrics to allow for the most
intricate of pattern matching. All sofa and chair frames are made
from seasoned hardwood beech, each piece is planed, then the frame
is put together; dowelled & screwed and glued as appropriate - we
wont compromise the strength of our frames by introducing inferior
soft woods and manufactured composite boarding to cut corners and
quality as many other manufacturers do. All our sofa and chair seats
are fully coil sprung; either fixed coil springs over a Hessian
webbed based or fully coil sprung seating units, depending on style
We have a commitment to using natural
materials within the interior
of our furniture. Once the springs have been secured under a layer
of burlap, we then build up the frame using bonded hair, cotton
wadding and woollen felt to pad the frame to perfection.
Finally we apply the covering of you own
personal choice. To help
we have and extensive library of fabrics including Sanderson, Morris &
Co, Monkwell, Andrew Martin, Ian Sanderson, Romo, GP & J Baker,
Linwood, James Brindley of Harrogate, The Isle Mill, Niche, Blendworth,
Wemyss, Fadini Bourghi, Romanex and Crowson, Covertex, Ross Fabrics,
Sherwood, Kirkby House, Warwick, Portland Fabrics & John Boyd Textiles.
We offer a large range of cushion
interiors including feather, CMHR
foam wrapped in hollofibre and fibrefill, all as standard, plus
feather & down, foam & feather and 100% down (as optional extras)
to complete your furniture, perfected for you.
Whatever your upholstery requirements,
whether it is a simple bedroom
chair, a personally designed sofa, a full suite of furniture, an
eclectic mix of individual pieces or simply a footstool, screen,
headboard or panelling, we will work with you to create your perfect
furniture, just for you.
