Welcome to the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens, Alabama. We invite you to
tour our facility free of admission charge anytime you are in history-rich North Alabama.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives, located in the old L&N Freight Depot in
Athens, was the brainchild of the late Limestone County, Alabama, Veterans Service Officer
Kenneth David. After collecting artifacts for an exhibit to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of the end of World War II in 1995, Ken still had many artifacts left after
the exhibit closed that contributors didn't retrieve. He wanted a permanent place to
display the artifacts to honor the brave men and women from the Civil War to the present
who fought and died to keep our land free. The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives opened
its doors in 2000 with a few primitive displays and much renovation work still to be done.
We had our Grand Opening and Dedication service on Nov. 10, 2002. Our guest speaker was
Johnny Spann of Winfield, Ala., father of Mike Spann, the first American killed in
Afghanistan in the wake of the terrorist attack on America. One week later, Ken David lost
his battle with cancer.

boys a rewarding experience under the leadership of dedicated Christian men in a beautiful
and remote setting where our campers can truly "increase in wisdom and in stature and
in favor with God and man."In today's complex society, we are convinced that nothing
can take the place of the proper home environment, where a boy is surrounded by love,
affection and careful parental guidance. However, we feel that a fun and adventurous
summer under the proper direction and supervision of strong male role models will do more
than anything else to supplement the home training which a child has received.

The Ave Maria Grotto, known throughout the world as "Jerusalem in Miniature", is
a beautifully landscaped, four-acre park designed to provide a natural setting for the 125
miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines of the
world. The masterpieces of stone and concrete are the lifetime work of Brother Joseph
Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Begun as a hobby, with various materials
he could find, and infinite patience and a remarkable sense of symmetry and proportion,
Brother Joseph re-created some of the greatest edifices of all time. The gift shop provides
entry to a forested trail, winding down past several miniature building clusters and
junk-bejeweled shrines. Round a bend, and you see it-an entire hillside packed in urban
splendor with cathedrals and famous building. One half of the hillside features building
and scenes from the Holy Land. There's also a central artificial cave-the Ave Maria
Grotto.Among the numerous replicas which elicit admiration and wonderment from the visitor
are the famous buildings of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, familiar to all from the Bible;
Roman Landmarks, as St. Peter's and the Colosseum; the famous Spanish Missions of the
American Southwest, and replicas of the famous Shrines of OUr Lady, Fatima and Lourdes.

Alabama on what is known as the Bear Creek Water Control Project. The project was overseen
and is now controlled by the Bear Creek Development Authority or BCDA. Over the years,
there have been 15 public use areas developed by the BCDA. These developments have made
possible, among other things, public use areas for camping, fishing, swimming, picnicking
and boating. An assortment of fish can be found in the Bear Creek Lakes. Large and
small-mouth bass, crappie and channel catfish are all abundant in these lakes.
